Saw him again the morning of the 17th but only for a second and had no shot. When i got down that morning I went and got my climber and moved it to within 100 yards of where the deer crossed a logging road. I returned the next morning and he showed up right behind me at 7:30. After the shot i had to wait 30 minutes for two spikes and a doe to leave the area(longest half hour of my life).I showed my Dad the trail cam photo two days before and he said"I hope you get him" so when I walked up to the deer he was the first one I called. I told him you must have said a prayer because Im sitting beside him. He was as excited as I was, and drove from work straight to the timber land we lease.I was hunting with my best friend that morning and he and his dad were just as excited,it showed our management program was paying off. Not that its the most important thing, but people keep asking me and I think hes going to go around 150. I turned around and there stood a big buck about 25 yards away looking up at me. I didn't hesitate to shoot and dropped him where he stood. He had 5 points on his left antler and 8 points on his right with 3 of those points on the brow tines. He was over 200 lbs. This was the biggest buck I have gotten over 50 years of deer hunting.

Poll: Rate this entry:

TAKE THE PHOTOS OUTDOORS
If the buck was brought home before you found someone with a camera, take the deer outside for the photos. Nothing looks worse than a buck on the garage floor with cans, pails, lawn mowers and tires in the background.

Also follow the following photo tips.....
SELECT A NEUTRAL BACKGROUND
In the excitement of taking trophy photos no one ever looks beyond the animal or hunter. Houses, barns, tractors and powers lines all ruin the quality of the photo. Use an evergreen tree, a screen of brush or hills and woods for the background. Find a color that will highlight the antlers - not hide them. Don’t let them blend into the background.

TAKE THE DEER OFF THE CAR, OUT OF THE TRUNK OR OUT OF THE PICKUP TRUCK.

CLEAN UP VISIBLE BLOOD AND MAKE SURE DEER'S TONGUE DOESN'T SHOW.

TAKE THE ANIMAL DOWN FROM THE TREE AND REMOVE THE ROPE.

ALWAYS USE A FLASH TO TAKE OUT SHADOWS.

NO SUNGLASSES, BEER CANS OR CIGARETTES.

HAVE WEAPON IN PHOTO. (IN A SAFE MANOR)

DO NOT SIT ON DEER FOR PHOTOS.

WEAR HUNTING CLOTHES.

TAKE PHOTO CLOSE UP.

Here's the story:
It was raining, 42° and generally miserable. I got into my ladder stand around 6:45 AM which overlooked the side hill of a saddle where the deer always cross from the oaks on one side to the thick brush on the other side. Over the years, family members and I have taken over 20 deer in this general area which we call "above the camper below the Old Cherry Tree" (the Old Cherry Tree is about 7 or 8 Feet in Diameter - you can't miss it!). At about 8:45 AM I was getting quite cold and wet and miserable, so I decided to climb down from my stand and walk up the 4-wheeler path up towards the "Old Cherry Tree". I had just gone around some grapevines and raspberry thicket and saw 2 does milling around under an oak tree that bordering a bruch thicket that runs up the hill about 40 or so yards. I scoped them out to see if the little one might be a button buck - I didn't have a doe tag this year, so they were safe. A few seconds later the 11-point came busting out of the brush and ran up the hill skirting the brush, I found his chest and fired, he didn't act like he was hit and crossed the 4-wheeler path and turned around looking back where he came from and was broadside and uphill from me - I found his chest and fired again - he vanished from my scope. I still hadn't gotten a good look at the horns, but I knew he met the 4-point on one side restriction. I thought for sure that I had missed him, but being a good sportsman, I always follow my shots and went up the hill to look for him. After looking around for about 10 minutes, I saw an antler sticking up over a log on the ground and there he was! Then I saw the rack and started high-fiving myself (since I was alone in the woods!). I field dressed him and dragged him the 200 yards down hill to the camper and loaded him into the truck. He weighed about 120 lb or so, but he had been rutting real hard for a while now - he was quite "musky" so he was still active.
To say the least, I was the talk of the holler this past week for killing the "Double Drop-Tine Buck" that theneighbors all had on their trail cams.

He is at the Taxidermist's right now and should be done by the end of June - Can't wait to hang this Wall-Hanger on my wall!

Poll: Rate this entry:

I have been hunting in Maine since 2004. This is the first deer that I harvested there and my first buck. The hunting has been hard since a deep snow during the spring of 2007 when many deer died of starvation. There was almost 200 inches of snow during the late winter, early spring.

However, I have tried to hunt both smarter and harder. I scouted a good location and sat there. I hiked up a hill half a mile off of a tote road. I hunted the spot for two days afterin scouting it.

This buck was taken with a 30.06 at 25 yards. He was weighed at a certified scale at check in and was a respectable 195 pounds. He had 10 points and was in excellent condition.

Poll: Rate this entry:

It was the last day of the first Illinios shotgun season. To start the morning off I woke up at 5 am got all my hunting clothes on and started to walk to the stand. I got half way there and I realizes I didnt have my orange hat on. So i walked back to the house and got my hat. So once again I got half way to the stand and I forgot my tags. Now Im thinking about going back to bed and wait when its light out but I truffed it out and went back. It was 6:15 when i got in the stand. I waited 10 to 15 min. when I grutted once and doe bleat. 5 mins. went by when I was a deer walking on the hill side about 50 yards. I told myself its a doe and I already had it in my mind that I was going to shoot it until it walked in a small opening and what do u know it was a buck. I was studying it hard and I was thinking its a nice 8 point. I knew it was out to the ears or more. It was starting to walk down the hill when I put the old smack down wiht my mossbreg 500 and winchesters rackmasters. He dope and rolled down in a small creek and I was thinking he was dead so I didnt really look that much. About the time when I a shot the buck when a doe was comeing my way real fast so I tryed to shoot at but I killed a tree instead. A hour went by when I heard kicking down where the buck was I looked and I saw thw rack moveing. So I climed down the stand walked over to see him and when I walked up on him he was still alive and I couldnt beleave what I was seeing. It was the buck I missed during the bow season not one time but two times. So I had help gutting the deer out and my uncle said " I think I have sheds of him from 2008 " and he did. At the end I was really happy and I was really lucky.

Poll: Rate this entry:

Once a year we (3 girls) are invited to hunt at a friends place in Greeleyville, SC. we love it because it's pretty much all swamp and they treat us like the queens we think we are :D. good company, good food, good times and deer would make it even better!

Sat Friday night and saw 41 turkey, and 6 deer. had a buck chasing a doe but never could get a shot. had a small deer come out to the corn before dark, but I didn't shoot because I was worried it wasn't big enough and we still had two more days of hunting.

So we pass on the pre-dawn hunt because we didn't know where to go and decided to sit late morning instead. After the fog finally lifted, he dropped us off at our stands around 10am. we wanted to be in the swamp hoping to catch something. I sat there last year and was familiar with the area though I didn't see anything last year. it was fairly open swamp - getting a shot would be tough, but we hoped it would pay off.

not even in the stand 5 mins, I look to my right and I see a buck walking away from me. once I picked my jaw up off the floor, I tried to get the gun up but he was behind a tree and I didn't see him again. I hoped he would stick around, so I took time to set my junk on the floor, out of the way in case I needed to shift around if he came back. fired up the thermacel because I didn't want skeeters buzzing around. tried to play all the scenarios in my head. called a few times with the bleat can and sprayed a whiff of buck urine in the air hoping for something, ANYTHING! Was trying to figure out how to describe it to the girls later on, and all I could think was 'It looked like a mule deer!'

3 minutes later, I see him, at 20 yards! way to my right and he took a step and was behind a tree, so I stood up and tried to hide behind some duck blind camo stuff. stuck the gun through a small opening in the mesh and tried to find him in the scope that I had set at 12 power, lol. finally found him but he was behind some brush. I told myself, be ready! by then he took a step and was at 10 yards and I thought I felt like he was staring right at me, but I think he was just sniffing and trying to find either the source of the bleat, or the buck pee. I figured now, or never and shot and he was so close I could see the blood and knew it was a good shot. he ran about 30 yards across 2 creeks. I called our host and said 'you have to come get me, I just shot a buck' and he didn't believe me!

so I had waded to the deer by the time he got back and we trudged through the muck that was thigh deep on me and then uphill (it really was) and the whole hunt was over in about 20 mins. I was astounded because I have never seen anything that big.

ended the other girls hunts early so we could get him the processor, since it was 85 degrees and our host didn't want me cleaning him there.

went back to the processor this morning to get my cape and dropped it off at the taxidermist in moncks corner. now it's going to make my 8 point from last month look like a baby!

so this has been an expensive deer season with 2 at the taxidermist!

anyways it was 7 points (one tine broken off while in velvet) with a 20 inch spread! he was very skinny - you could feel his hip bones and spine. cant wait to see what he ages - but we think he's pretty old.
